MÉD. Traitement médical caractérisé par l'emploi méthodique des bains, ,,y compris les bains de boue, de sable, de soleil, de lumière artificielle et, par extension, les applications de rayons infrarouges et ultraviolets`` (Méd. Biol. t. 1 1970). Balnéothérapie thermale, marine (GARNIER-DEL. 1958).

• 1. On réserve plus particulièrement le nom de balnéothérapie à la méthode de Brand (ou traitement systématique des maladies fébriles par les bains froids). Le principe de cette méthode est que le bain froid abaisse la température, la réfrigération périphérique gagnant les organes profonds.
